Bolgrad

The town of Bolgrad is the administrative center of the district of Bolgrad and is located in the historical-geographical region of Budjak (Southern Bessarabia). It is located on the northern shore of Lake Yalpug - one of the largest freshwater lakes in Ukraine and 176 kilometers southwest of Odessa. The population of the city is about 17,000 people. The city was founded in 1821. The urban territorial community of Bolgrad, in addition to the city of Bolgrad, includes the villages of Vladichen, Vinogradovka, Tabaki and Zaliznichno, as well as the villages of Oksamitne and Topoline. As of 31.12.2020, the Bolgrad region includes 1 town and 21 villages with a population of about 75,000 people and an area of 1364 km². After the administrative-territorial reform in Ukraine, the district of Bolgrad significantly increased in territory and population, including the former districts of Artsiz and Tarutino in the district of Odessa. The territory of the region of Bolgrad is dominated by flat steppe, with low hills and valleys. The water area in the Bolgrad region is over 52 km². With the largest area is Lake Yalpug - 38.54 km². The climatic conditions are characterized by a large number of sunny days a year, very dry summers and autumns, which is favorable for recreation and tourism. Bolgrad can be reached by highway of international importance E87 (Odessa-Antalya, Republic of Turkey). This highway on the territory of Ukraine coincides with the national highway M15 Odessa-Reni (near Bucharest, Romania).
